LGM Program Day Reflection – Hospitality & Tourism Day 2025
L
eadership Greater Manchester’s Hospitality and Tourism Day offered a behind-the-scenes look at how entertainment, food, tourism, and transportation come together to support Manchester’s economy. Through conversations with people working directly in these industries and hands-on experiences throughout the day, it became clear just how connected these sectors are and how much they rely on one another to keep the city thriving.

We began the day learning about Manchester’s entertainment industry, and the role major venues and sports organizations play in driving activity in downtown Manchester and attracting visitors to the region. One of the biggest takeaways of the day was learning how interconnected these venues are. When there’s a concert, game, or show in the city, the impact spreads quickly.
Restaurants are fuller, hotels see more guests, and other venues benefit from the increased energy. Several speakers mentioned that they can feel when the city is busier, and that kind of momentum is good for everyone. Success is not isolated, and when Manchester is active, everyone wins.
These robust conversations took place at the Aviation Museum, which provided a unique setting for the day. In between sessions, we had time to explore the museum and learn about Manchester’s aviation history. From the story of Alan Shepard to exhibits featuring various types of aircraft, the museum showcased the city’s long-standing connection to innovation, transportation, and national history. This added valuable context to the broader discussions about economic development and infrastructure.

The focus then shifted to the food, lodging, and tourism industries. We heard honest perspectives on the challenges facing restaurants and hospitality businesses today, including rising labor and food costs, workforce shortages, and the effects of state budgeting decisions. At the same time, there was a strong emphasis on adaptability and collaboration. Local restaurants and coffee shops do more than serve food. They help define the character of the city and play a key role in creating a welcoming and vibrant community.
Later in the day, we visited Manchester-Boston Regional Airport to learn how air travel supports the region. We gained insight into the airlines the airport serves, how new airlines are recruited, and what makes MHT competitive. The tour provided us with a behind-the-scenes look at operations, including time on the tarmac and a close-up view of the airport’s fire and safety equipment. It was eye-opening to see how much planning and coordination are required to keep travelers safe.
We also discussed the airport’s economic impact and one of its biggest advantages: convenience. Short security lines and an easy-to-navigate terminal make it an appealing option for travelers and an important asset for Manchester.
Overall, Hospitality and Tourism Day highlighted how entertainment, dining, tourism, and transportation are all part of the same ecosystem. Each plays a role in supporting the others, and together they help drive Manchester’s economic success. The day reinforced the importance of collaboration and shared momentum in building a strong, vibrant community.
