Michael L’Ecuyer Named Citizen of the Year!
We are pleased to announce Michael L’Ecuyer has been named the GMCC Citizen of the Year. The award will be presented to Michael on Thursday, April 18th at the Chamber’s Annual Dinner and Citizen of the Year Celebration at the DoubleTree by Hilton Manchester Downtown, presented by Eastern Bank. The Citizen of the Year award is an annual tradition of the GMCC which first began in 1954.
Michael L’Ecuyer, president & CEO of Bellwether Community Credit Union (BCCU), has led the company to serve more than 35,000 members in New Hampshire – an increase of more than 25,000 since he became president and CEO in November 2001. During this time, the credit union has grown from $197 million to $500 million in assets and more than doubled the number of employees from 39 to 90. More importantly, Michael has instilled an incredible culture within the organization. He encourages his management team and employees to become involved in community work that is meaningful to them. His leadership style inspires others and he is a strategic communicator. He has a unique ability to get to the heart of an issue and get people rallied around a common goal, using this gift in all his work, with incredible results.
A fervent believer in the credit union mission and philosophy, Michael holds leadership positions for the financial services industry on both the local and national level. Michael is completing his 8th year as the chairman of the America’s Credit Union Museum, raising $3.3 million in a national campaign that served to renovate and expand the museum space and incorporate an industry research library into the west-side Manchester location. Michael is also a past board member and past chair of the New England Automated Clearing House and a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank advisory board. Michael worked tirelessly as a past director of the Credit Union National Association; past chair of the New Hampshire Credit Union League; and has formerly represented community banking institutions as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston Community Depository Institutions advisory council.
BCCU’s growth and success is not Michael L’Ecuyer’s only focus, however. Michael has a genuine passion to get involved in his community and truly make a difference locally. He currently serves as a trustee and is a past chair of the Palace Theatre Trust. Michael also currently serves on the board of directors at Northeast Delta Dental and recently completed his chairmanship of the NH Business Committee for the Arts. He has served in leadership positions for many local organizations: past chairman of NH Go Red for Women, past chairman of the Greater Manchester Chamber, past board member of City Year New Hampshire; former chair of the March of Dimes Signature Chef’s Auction and has been co-chair of several capital campaigns at the Palace Theatre. Michael is not afraid of supporting local non-profits in non-traditional ways either – he danced in the Manchester Community Music School’s “Dancing with the Stars” several years ago, “winning” the event.
Michael has also devoted himself to building and shaping tomorrow’s leaders. He has been an energetic proponent of the CU4Reality program. This program provides a teacher-designed, career-based financial literacy curriculum to junior high and high schools. For over 10 years Michael has worked hard to get the program into schools and provided direct support through Bellwether employees.
Michael’s personal commitment to his community and local organizations has not gone unrecognized. Michael was the honoree at the 2018 Moore Center Garden Party and was recognized with a Good Samaritan Award in 2016 by Pastoral Counseling Services. Michael was awarded the NH Businesses in the Arts Leadership Award in 2014 by the NH Business Committee for the Arts and a Business Excellence Award by the New Hampshire Business Review in 2011.
While these awards demonstrate the community’s appreciation of Michael’s work, it seems that those involved with the organizations he has been associated with are incredibly proud to call him a friend and colleague.
Michael L’Ecuyer’s nomination for Citizen of the Year was championed by Nathan Saller, EVP/COO of BCCU. In his nomination, Saller said that, “Mike L’Ecuyer embraces the role of a leader – inside his organization, in the financial services industry, and throughout the community. Mike’s style can be explained with two phrases: passionate leadership and tireless involvement. His commitment to local community, his passion for volunteering and his leadership across so many organizations make him an outstanding honoree for Citizen of the Year.”
What others have to say…
“Anyone who knows Mike understands his passion for his community is unending. What people may not understand is that by leading by example, those around him have also made significant contributions to our community,” Jeff Benson, SVP/CIO, BCCU.
“There are no words that adequately convey the appreciation and respect we have for Mike L’Ecuyer. Over the past 20 years, during his tenure at Bellwether Community Credit Union, Mike has embodied the credit union movement’s philosophy of people helping people. His personal and professional commitment inspires us. Mike has personified his commitment to help others and instilled this in his family values too. Through his wife Debbie’s and daughter Kristine’s support, we have grown to understand his commitment to share our vision and inspire others to come along on the journey,” Julie Barron, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish New Hampshire
“Mike’s enthusiasm for life is contagious and makes all of us better citizens of this great community of Manchester,” Sylvio Dupuis, O.D.
